Warning: Rant ensues...
via: "Can You Love God and feminism" at Feministing.
Voice over: "I find that so many Christian women today are disoriented, they are confused, they are dysfunctional in many case as a result in buying into this culture..."
Well, their trailer makes a pretty convincing case that it's the Christian part that causes these problems. Because you know, it's a Hep Big God that needs to be glorified by female subjugation. Right. We've all broken up with that guy at least once.
But apostate that I am, even I can't believe this. It's one thing to implicitly hate on women, it's that again times infinity to be willing to bastadize their own scripture to accomplish the same. How insecure can you be?
I read their True Woman Manifesto with absolute nausea, not because of the run of pap:
“We realize that we live in a culture that does not recognize God’s right to rule, does not accept Scripture as the pattern for life, and is experiencing the consequences of abandoning God’s design for men and women,”
or because of the obvious, political/legal schizophrenic homophobia,
“Marriage, as created by God, is a sacred, binding, lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, …. Honor the sacredness, purity, and permanence of the marriage covenant—whether ours or others.” (Just kidding gays! I mean guys!)
or for the Tickle-Me-Emo-vacuity of certain statements:
“Suffering is an inevitable reality in a fallen world; at times we will be called to suffer for doing what is good—looking to heavenly reward rather than earthly comfort—for the sake of the gospel and the advancement of Christ’s Kingdom.”
No. It makes me sick to my gut because these people take something that is supposed to be good (ie: God, or else what’s the use of having one in a society where all our basic needs are met?) out of something that is basically ok (ie: Christianity), and making it petty and dirty. If there were indeed a Benevolent God than I have as much a right to It as these folks & the reciprocal. But I don’t want It after they’ve used It like that.
Because that’s what they do. Petty and dirty. Because (and I was raised arbitrarily Catholic, so please indulge) I cannot and can never accept that a Benevolent God had a loving black hippie baby and sent it down to bring comfort to folks and get them to be nice, to be crucified, and go to hell and back, for the purpose of convincing us ladies that:
When we respond humbly to male leadership in our homes and churches, we demonstrate a noble submission to authority that reflects Christ’s submission to God His Father.
&, best of all that:
Selfish insistence on personal rights is contrary to the spirit of Christ who humbled Himself, took on the form of a servant, and laid down His life for us.
…Because, OBVIOUSLY that life that isn’t worth dignity and respect. This makes me wonder as to the value these people place on their Christ, that he would sacrifice himself for something so trivial. What do these people want a Christ like that for anyway?
And have they even read their Bible? Because they cite the following scriptures to support it (all pulled from BibleGateWay.com NIV)
Luke 13:30 "Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last."
John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."
Eph. 4:32 "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you."
Phil 2:5-8 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: (6) Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, (7) but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. (8) And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death...
Which sounds nothing like “don’t be selfish because God loves nothing as much as a doormat” and very much like “be like Christ: passionate progressive Hippie anti-establishment reformer, and the best friend you’ll ever have.”
But hey, what do I know? I’m only literate.
